LOCATION: Huon Valley

Sleeping up to 9, Thompson’s Shack is family and group friendly, located 75 minutes south of Hobart, on the Huon River. Just meters from the pristine white sandy shores of Surveyors Bay, this waterfront north-facing shack has direct access to the beach. Recently refreshed throughout, the shack is a collection of old and new gathered to make a comfortable, cozy getaway in a truly beautiful location. Well equipped for relaxation or adventure, with kayaks, firepots, and plenty of comfortable spots to enjoy the view, we’d love to have you stay.

Thompson’s shack was originally built as a farm shed and used for packing apples and shearing sheep in its early life. In the 1940s, the Thompson family took over the building, and the shack remained in their family for over 80 years.

The shack has been recently refreshed throughout but retains much of its character, including the lovely mantelpiece and undulating subflooring. The kitchen is well equipped, the lounge room is warm and cozy, and there are plenty of spaces to enjoy this stunning location. We have 4 kayaks, 3 adult and 1 youth, with life jackets that must be worn at all times, beach toys and shelters, beachside chiminea, and an undercover BBQ area with a full-size Weber family Q for you to enjoy. There is a very handy second toilet outside, in a small shed attached to the carport. There is also a mooring available by request.

Supplies: Our nearest IGA is in Dover, a 15-minute drive away. There is also a bottle shop, chemist, and post office. As you travel south from Hobart, we suggest you gather your supplies along the way, or you can arrange for a delivery through Coles online during your stay.

Nightlife: Apart from an occasional aurora or bioluminescence, Surveyors is a quiet community with a mixture of permanent residents and holiday homes. Toasting marshmallows in the chiminea and stargazing is a must, but please be respectful of our neighbors after 10 p.m., and enjoy the restful sound of the waves lapping on the beach.
